Chatham
Chatham is in the heart of SouthWestern Ontario, positioned between Lake Erie to the Southeast, Lake St. Clair to the Northwest and centrally located between Windsor, Sarnia and London.
Located on the Thames River, Chatham is the largest of the cities in the amalgamated municipality of Chatham-Kent.
Public Transit
CKTransit provides local bus service every 30 minutes within Chatham, as well as Inter-Urban Transit to communities throughout Chatham-Kent. For persons with a disability, as well as the elderly or frail who cannot board the Public Transit System, Chatham offers its Specialized Transit Service, which is a personalized curb-to-curb transportation service.
Trains & Busses
Greyhound operates a variety of buses that provide transportation to communities throughout Ontario, as well as to destinations in the United States.
ViaRail provides regularly scheduled passenger train service to Sarnia, and along the Windsor to Toronto and Montreal corridor.
Roads
Chatham is serviced by a well established network of regional and provincial highways: the major highways being Highway 401, the highway that runs from Windsor across the full southern portion of Ontario and Highway 40, which links Chatham and Sarnia via Wallaceburg.
Air
While Chatham does have a local municipal airport, the closest commercial air passenger service is available through Windsor International Airport about 50 minutes from Chatham, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport about 80 minutes from Chatham, or London International Airport which is about 80 minutes from Chatham.
Health Care in Chatham
In Chatham, many of the health care needs of residents are met by the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, a 200 + bed community hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and technologies. Academically affiliated with the Schulich School of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, the Chatham Kent Health Alliance provides patient and family-centred care on an inpatient, out patient, and emergency basis.
The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has two campuses, one in Chatham at 80 Grand Street West and the other, the Sydenham Campus – Wallaceburg District Hospital is located in Wallaceburg, Ontario.
Educate in Brampton
The Chatham-Kent area offers a range of educational opportunities. These include enrolment in public and private elementary and secondary schools, instruction in English and French, adult and continuing education programs, and two post-secondary institutions.
For families with children, the Lambton-Kent District School Board, and the St. Clair Catholic District Board are responsible for education from pre-school and kindergarten though to the end of secondary school. The Counseil scolaire de district des ecoles catholique du Sud-Ouest provides francophone catholic families with educational opportunities.
For those wishing to continue their education or upgrade their skills, Chatham is home to the Thames Campus of St. Clair College. About 30 minutes away, is the University of Guelph’s Ridgeway Campus, which offers diploma and certificate programs in agriculture, horticulture, environmental management and veterinary technology, plus much more.
THINGS TO DO IN THE CITY
Chatham residents of all ages and interests can enjoy year-round sports and recreation. Chatham is home to a range of parks with playgrounds and trails for walking, jogging, bird watching and just enjoying the outdoors. Go just a short distance outside Chatham to other parts of Chatham-Kent and you can enjoy two lakeside Provincial Parks (Rondeau and Wheatley) and Chatham-Kent’s eight sandy beaches along the shores of Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and Mitchell’s Bay.
There are also abundant opportunities to appreciate arts and culture, learn about the areas rich heritage, and visit numerous local historical landmarks.
The ARTspace, Thames Art Gallery, Chatham-Kent Museums, the St. Clair College Capitol Theatre, and the Chatham Cultural Centre, a unique facility hosting a live theatre, art gallery and museum under one roof are a few of the places to discover the areas heritage and to explore new art expressions.
